Freeride
Fat skis are the norm in Valfréjus: the resort regularly gets heavy snowfall thanks to the retour d’Est, and the Punta Bagna couloirs (2,737 m) are well known to powder lovers. Every year the resort hosts a Freeride World Tour Qualifier (4 stars); in 2027 it is announced for 17 March.
Outside the open, secured runs, the rule is simple: avalanche bulletin, transceiver, shovel, probe, and preferably a guide or instructor from the resort.
Speed riding
A mix of skiing and paragliding, speed riding was invented in Valfréjus. It is practised all winter with the resort’s professionals, who offer initiations. Spectacular to watch from the apartment balcony on clear days.
Ski touring
Valfréjus has been a ski-touring hotspot since the early 20th century (alpine troops, one of the first ski crossings of the Alps between Modane and Bardonecchia). Today:
- Before the lifts open, climbs from Le Lavoir or straight from the resort towards the Thabor or the Grand Argentier
- In winter, departures possible from the top of Punta Bagna after the gondola and chairlift
- The Thabor hut, staffed from mid-February to the end of April, allows star-shaped outings for all levels: initiation towards Pointe de Terre Rouge, north face of Gran Bagna, ski mountaineering on Roche Bernaude
- On the last Sunday of March, La Traversée des Rois Mages gathers hundreds of participants
Guidance recommended: guides and instructors listed by the resort.
