Why stop here
Modane is the commune of Valfréjus: the resort sits on its heights, 8 km away by road. This is where you will do your shopping (supermarkets, bakeries, pharmacies), catch the train (an international station on the Paris–Turin line) and where the A43 motorway towards Chambéry and the Fréjus tunnel to Italy begin.
What to see
- The Muséobar – Border Museum: housed in a former cinema opposite the station, it tells the story of life on the border, from the boring of the Fréjus railway tunnel (1871) to the 1930s, through reconstructions of period bars, testimonies and music. A visit takes about an hour and suits children.
- The international station and its history: for a century Modane was the great rail border crossing between France and Italy.
- Fort du Replaton, above the town, for a walk with a view (see our page on military heritage).
- The weekly market: [[À COMPLÉTER PAR SAM]] (jour et emplacement).
Practical information
- By road: 15 to 20 minutes from the apartment, via the D216 (hairpin bends, take care in winter).
- Parking: free near the centre and the station.
- Muséobar opening times and prices: see the town’s website before you come.
