Why go
Bardonecchia (1,312 m) is about ten minutes past the exit of the Fréjus tunnel. The pedestrian old centre is lined with cafés, pastry shops, grocers and sports shops; it is the easiest place to “pop over to Italy” for a lunch or a market.
In winter
An Olympic resort (snowboard, Turin 2006 Games) with several areas linked by shuttle, including Jafferau and Campo Smith: pistes through the forest, with prices often lower than in French resorts. The lift pass is separate from Valfréjus.
In summer
Swimming pool, adventure park, walks in the side valleys (Valle Stretta, partly French but accessible from Bardonecchia), mountain biking. The weekly market brings the centre to life: [[À COMPLÉTER PAR SAM]] (jour du marché).
Practical information
- By road: about 30 minutes, including the Fréjus tunnel (toll each way; the same-day return fare is good value, see SFTRF).
- Photo ID for every passenger, children included.
- Paid car parks in the centre; free ones a little further out.
