The site

In the commune of Val-Cenis (hamlet of Sardières, formerly the commune of Sollières-Sardières), a 93 m-high limestone monolith stands alone among the larches. A listed natural site, it is also a well-known climbing route.

The walk

  • From the car park in the hamlet of Sardières, a wide, flat path leads to the foot of the needle in 15 to 20 minutes. Suitable for children and all-terrain pushchairs.
  • A longer loop through the forest leads to viewpoints over the valley and the village of Sollières.
  • In winter, the walk is done on snowshoes or on foot depending on snow cover.

Practical information

  • By road: about 30 minutes via Modane, Bramans then Sollières.
  • Free. Bring water in summer: there is no water point on site.
  • Combine with Aussois or Val Cenis for a full day.
