What to see
- The Bastille cable car and its spherical cabins (the “bubbles”), since 1934: ride up to the Bastille fort for a panorama over the city, the Vercors, the Chartreuse and Belledonne, then walk back down through the Guy-Pape park.
- The Musée de Grenoble: one of France’s great modern art collections (Matisse, Picasso, Chagall).
- The Musée Dauphinois, in a former convent, on the history of the Alps.
- The old town: Place Grenette, Place Saint-André, the Sainte-Claire covered market, the Jardin de Ville.
- With children: the tram, the Bastille, the Parc Paul-Mistral.
Practical information
- By road: about 1 h 40 via the A43 then the A48 and A480 (tolls).
- The city centre is a low-emission zone and parking is difficult: aim for a park-and-ride on the edge of town and take the tram.
- Alternative by train from Modane, changing at Chambéry: about 2 hours.
